I. Description of Problem or Issue
Students with disabilities are being dumped into classrooms and not given the help they need. Such as receiving teacher aids, the individual attention and their own learning plan. Meaning the teachers lessons aren't meeting the students needs. As well as the students who are being left in the segregated special education classes aren't getting the social interaction. The goal of any teacher is to prepare their students for the real world and if special needs students don't get to experience social interactions with others, they wont be able to function in society.
II. Research Summary
Shannen's Research Showed:
Teachers and Parents have different view on inclusion. Some parents prefer their child to be segregated from other students while other parents want their child to be included with everyone else. Teachers that do not have the right education find it hard to include these students into their teaching plans and curriculum but there are programs and plans such as UCL to help those teachers. School districts want inclusion because it saves them money in the long run because there are fewer schools but with taking away special education schools they need to qualify the general education teachers to be able to teach special education. There has been studies that show the positive and negative effects of inclusion and in most school districts today special education students are being integrated into the general education class rooms.
Emily's Research Showed:
Many people are concerned with how inclusion will affect students with disabilities and general education students. Some push to have inclusion in the classroom by saying it helps students understand others differences and allows the special needs students to interact with others and feel included in their community. While others are concerned that this will negatively impact all students. They are afraid that it the teacher wont give the general education students the individual attention they need, also that there might be interruptions in class. Also that the students with disabilities will do poorly because they wont be able to keep up with the work load and feel uncomfortable in the general education classroom setting. There are many sides to this argument and studies have shown that both sides have valid points, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't depending on the student.
Paola's Research Showed:
Most parents in United States are concerned about how their children with disabilities are learning in the classroom. Some research has been conducted to show that teacher aids are an effective part of the special education class. The research conducted showed that teachers aides are an essential part of the classroom. Within the classroom the teachers aide are really close to the students, they learn how to earn there attention. Part of that closeness is because the aides are in physical contact with the student such as help in them move certain body parts and push their wheelchairs. The aide will always be at access to the student and have contact with the parents about their performance.
Lauren's Research Showed:
A lot of people have certain views on inclusion and whether it is a good or bad situation for students, but the students who have the intellectual disabilities never really get a say. There are different levels of disabilities that people have which include an IQ of >20 to 70. Some individuals with the lower IQ may not be able to keep up in the bigger classrooms even with a Teacher Assistant there. Also, many people who are diagnosed with an intellectual disability also have other diagnoses including Autism, Aspergers, Down Syndrome. Because of these other diagnoses which usually come along with difficulty in social skills a big classroom with other students may be a problem for some of these specific students. The research showed that it would really depend on each individual student if their specific situation was best for them to be in that type of environment.
